Ashanti is a beautiful, healthy and loving 13-year-old. She is very independent and she took on caretaking responsibility for her younger brother before they both entered into foster care. She loves to play soccer. “I like being on the team and the team effort,” she says. “We all help each other out.” Ashanti also has a creative side. In her spare time, she likes to write music.

Very intelligent, Ashanti likes school and is a good student. She realizes the importance of succeeding academically in order to “further my life goals,” she says. Ashanti also enjoys being a cheerleader and she gets along well with other members of the squad.

Ashanti has endured many separations and losses, and is hoping to find a permanent family. She is open-minded about the kind of family. “It would just have to be nice and caring,” she explains. “There’s no specific type because you can’t judge one type of people until you get to know them ”Her foster parents are maintaining a Lifebook for her. It contains an on-going record of her life, including photos, souvenirs, documents and other items, along with her comments. Ashanti looks forward to sharing her Lifebook with the family that welcomes her into their home. She is very close to her younger brother, who is in a separate foster care placement, and it is vital that they remain in contact.

If you have ever considered adopting a child out of foster care, this could be the moment to act on your thoughts. Often people think of babies when they hear the word “adoption.” There are, however, relatively few infants in the foster care system awaiting permanent homes. The majority of the children are school age and many of them are teens, who desire and deserve the same kind of attention and love shown to younger children.

Adopting children out of the foster care system is not expensive. Parents do not need to earn a specific amount of income, and they do not need to own their own homes. Ashanti and other children are available for adoption by approved applicants. For a free information packet, contact the National Adoption Center at 1-800-TO-ADOPT or visit the website, www.adopt.org.
